In 1956 Fred and his wife Kathe Voll emigrated from Schweinfurt, Bavaria, Germany. Fred was a master sausage maker and obtained a job at an Armour packing plant in Fargo North Dakota. He then obtained a job with Red Owl grocery as a butcher. In 1959 he transferred to a Red Owl store in Madison, WI and soon became the manager of the meat department. Having a desire to run his own store, he purchased old sausage making equipment and opened a small store in downtown Madison.
Fred and Kathe purchased land in Fitchburg and Kathe designed and built a state of the art sausage making plant. By 1981, their daughter Judy and son in law Steve became involved in the business and are now owner operators with Fred and Kathe having retired although Fred still makes some products and delivers their food to Madison restaurants. They continue to make their food the old fashioned way by hand mixing and with no artificial ingredients.
